To the right is the navigation station. This is the central point for the electronics. These components have a relatively short life cycle (3-4 years) as they are always being replaced by a next generation which is faster, smarter, smaller and cheaper. For this reason they are mounted to a sheet of formica.

Black formica is used because it is inexpensive, readily available and easy to work with. The formica panels are then mounted to an aluminum frame that hinges forward to provide access to the wiring. Either panel can be replaced fairly easily to

accommodate changes to the electronics. The main panel has already been replaced once.

As you can see, three different networking schemes are necessary to get everything talking to each other.
